Concepts, Inc. Founder Karen Herson Wins 2018 FedFem Award

BETHESDA, Md. (November 13, 2018) – Concepts, Inc. is pleased to announce that its President and Founder, Karen Herson, is a 2018 Washington LeadersNest™ FedFem Award winner.

The FedFem awards salute high-impact, female business leaders in the government contracting industry who contribute to their local communities through not only entrepreneurism, but also volunteerism and philanthropy. LeadersNest honored Herson and other FedFem award recipients during a special ceremony on October 25 at ecofy in Washington, D.C.

Herson is a seasoned small business owner, skilled communications professional, dedicated volunteer and cancer survivor. She is a strong supporter of wounded warrior initiatives and an active volunteer with the American Red Cross at the Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md., where she sponsors its annual Thanksgiving feast for families and Mother’s Day Brunch. Herson is also a member of the DC Metro Business Leadership Network (DC Metro BLN), the 100 Entrepreneurs Project and the Entrepreneurs’ Organization DC (EO DC), where she served as communications chair.

As the president of Concepts, Herson fosters a “go above and beyond” approach to client satisfaction, drawing upon more than 25 years of experience in the public relations field. In years past, she directly managed a number of projects for the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) and other federal agencies. Her intricate knowledge of each client and project’s dynamics, as well as her dedication to unparalleled professionalism, is equally shared by her employees and consultants. Reflecting this, in 2018, Concepts ranked number seven on the Washington Business Journal’s Book of Lists for Public Relations Agencies.

“Being a government contractor allows us to make a living while also making a difference, and my vision in leading Concepts is to always do both,” said Herson, “We get to ‘communicate for good’ to promote positive change around important social issues.”

Herson is particularly proud of Concepts’ work to promote positive change around disability and employment. It is the first communications firm to carve a specialty niche in the disability policy arena. Examples of Concepts’ current work include management of the State Exchange on Employment and Disability (SEED) initiative and ePolicyWorks, both funded by ODEP. Concepts also conceived and manages ODEP’s Campaign for Disability Employment, for which it has produced four PSAs that communicate the value and talent people with disabilities add to America’s workplaces and economy.

According to LeadersNest, the 2018 FedFem Winners collectively generated more than $1.2 billion in annual revenue and employ more than 12,000 individuals.

“They are mission focused and ready,” says Heather Louise Finch, LeadersNest President. “They positively impact their local communities through philanthropic initiatives, all while, building wonderful businesses, serving their country, protecting U.S. citizens and driving innovation in healthcare, technology, cybersecurity, construction and communications. They are inspirational trailblazers that are driven to succeed. We are honored to recognize them for their achievements.”
