BETHESDA, Md. (Oct. 6, 2014) – Concepts, Inc., an independent communications firm specializing in disability and veterans issues, recently kicked off a new project with the U.S. Department of Labor’s Office of Disability Employment Policy (ODEP) to help employers understand how to diversify their workforce with the skills and talents of people with disabilities.
Under the year-long project, Concepts will synthesize lessons learned from the Add Us In grant program. Key tasks include producing a step-by-step guide for small businesses and developing and implementing a plan for effectively disseminating it through national, state and local Chambers of Commerce.
Since 2010, eight consortia were awarded grants under the Add Us In program to identify effective strategies for increasing the capacity of small businesses, especially those in historically underserved communities, to recruit and retain qualified people with disabilities. The overarching goal of Concepts’ support on this new initiative is to sustain and expand the consortia’s work prior to the conclusion of the Add Us In grant program next year.
“We are very proud of our experience in the disability arena, specifically in effectively communicating positive messages regarding disability and employment,” said Concepts President Karen Herson. “We look forward to helping ODEP ensure these messages reach not only large corporations with sophisticated diversity and inclusion programs, but also small businesses that may view the topic through a different lens.”
The Add Us In project is a natural extension of Concepts’ long-term work providing strategic communications support to ODEP. In fact, last month, Concepts started its ninth consecutive year of providing writing and editorial support to ODEP. Concepts is also the creative force behind the ODEP-funded Campaign for Disability Employment, a multi-organization initiative that uses public service announcements and other tactics to highlight the value and talent people with disabilities bring to America’s workplaces and economy.
